Why Ingredient Transparency Is the New Standard in Skincare

Ingredient transparency has moved from niche concern to mainstream expectation. Consumers who once accepted “proprietary blend” as a sufficient answer are now reading labels, cross-referencing ingredient databases, and asking brands to show their clinical evidence. This shift reflects a maturing market, and it is changing how serious skincare brands operate.

The Problem With Natural as a Marketing Term

The word “natural” has no regulated definition in Canadian or US cosmetics labeling. A product can carry “natural” in its name or marketing while containing synthetic preservatives, synthetic fragrance, and petrochemical-derived emollients. The inverse is also true: a rigorously tested, clean formulation may not use the word “natural” at all.

Ingredient transparency is the more useful standard. It means full ingredient disclosure, study references for active claims, and honest communication about what a product does and does not do at the surface level.

What Clinical Evidence Looks Like

Credible skincare brands publish their clinical study data with the specific measurement tool used, the study timeline, and the specific metric measured. Veriphy Skincare’s core PhytoSpherix active has been evaluated in Studies S-1180 and S-1181. Results include +53.3% skin-surface hydration at one hour from first application (Study S-1180, corneometer) and a 42% visible reduction in crow’s feet surface area at 6 weeks (Study S-1181, Visiometer). These are in-vivo, instrument-measured outcomes, not consumer survey data.

What to Ask of Any Brand

Before purchasing a product marketed as clean skincare, ask whether the full ingredient list is disclosed, whether active claims are backed by a named study or measurement instrument, and whether the brand discloses its testing and certification status.

If those answers are not visible on the brand website, that absence is itself information about their transparency commitment. Skincare formulated to a higher standard — evidence-based, fully disclosed, free of unnecessary additives — exists. The market has made room for it because consumers demanded it.
