For years, the clean and vegan skincare category was defined largely by what it excluded: animal-derived ingredients, synthetic fragrance, parabens, sulfates. The formulation story was primarily about removal. What is changing now is that leading vegan brands are adding a second layer to that story — clinical evidence.

The shift is visible in how ingredient decks are constructed and how brands communicate about results. Instead of “plant-powered” as a standalone claim, ingredient-literate consumers are now seeing specific study references alongside specific actives — a communication style that had previously been the domain of pharmaceutical or quasi-pharmaceutical skincare only.
